Welcome to the The Armistice Room, a room that bears the significant historical event where the armistice treaty between the Danish army and the Prussian-Austrian forces was negotiated and concluded on the night between 17 and 18 July 1864. This room takes you back to one of the most dramatic periods in Danish history, where the negotiations ultimately led to an armistice and the start of the peace talks in Vienna.
The story behind the room
In 1864, Denmark was at war with two great powers - Prussia and Austria - and the Danish army faced great challenges. After a long and bloody conflict, including the dramatic storm at Dybbøl, the Danish government sent Colonel Heinrich Kauffmann to negotiations in Aabenraa with a mandate to reach an armistice. On 18 July 1864, Kauffmann and Prussian Lieutenant Colonel Gustav von Stiehle reached the Brødremenighedens Hotel in Christiansfeld, where the negotiations were concluded and the armistice treaty was signed. The treaty came into force on 20 July and was a step towards Denmark losing the Duchies of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenborg.
