Welcome to Countess Danner Room, a room that tells the story of Louise Danner, a woman whose life was characterised by both scandal and influence. Louise Danner became known as Frederik VII's mistress and later his wife, and her life reflected a transition from private drama to political attention in Danish history.
The story behind the room
Louise Danner was born in 1815 as Louise Christine Rasmussen and grew up in modest circumstances. She began her career as a dancer and quickly gained recognition, but her life took a dramatic turn when she met and became the mistress of Crown Prince Frederik in the 1840s. In 1850, she married him as a baroness and was given the title of Countess of Samsø.
Despite the political and social opposition they faced, Frederik VII and Countess Danner developed a close relationship and often travelled together. In 1858, they celebrated the king's 50th birthday at the Brødremenighedens Hotel. It was here that Countess Danner also gave the hotel a large chandelier, which today hangs in the ballroom Kongesalen.
In 1863, as a prelude to the 1864 war, they visited the hotel again, and this time it was also here that Countess Danner presented the chandelier. After the king's death in 1863, Countess Danner retired and lived a quiet life, spending much of her fortune on setting up a foundation for women and girls in need. She died in 1874 and was buried at Jægerspris Castle.
