Welcome to the Christian VII Room - A room that honours one of Denmark's most complex monarchs, Christian VII. Known for his youth as king, his illness and the dramatic events of his reign, the room is characterised by both tragedy and reform.

The story behind the room

Christian VII was born on 29 January 1749 at Christianborg Castle. As a young man, he was brought up in difficult circumstances, where his father, King Frederik V, did not take care of his upbringing, and a choleric educator, Ditlev Reventlow, filled the young prince with fear and oppression. This harsh upbringing affected Christian VII deeply and left its mark on his mental health.

He became king at the age of 16 after his father's death in 1766, and from the very beginning he showed signs of illness that were later diagnosed as schizophrenia. His reign was characterised by periods of lethargy and violent tantrums, making his rule unpredictable.

In 1766, he married the English princess Caroline Mathilde, but the marriage was quickly characterised by his indifference and coldness towards the Queen. In 1768, the King went on a long trip abroad, where he was accompanied by his personal physician Johan Friedrich Struensee, who had a great understanding of the King's illness. During this journey, the King was inspired to found the unique city Christiansfeld in Denmark, which was built for Brødremenigheden and named in his honour.

Unfortunately, the King quickly lost control of his own government and Struensee, who had gained great power over him, was deposed in 1772. In 1807, when the British attacked Copenhagen, the confused king was forced to flee to Holstein, where he died of a stroke on 13 March 1808.
